A Bright Fish Feed Market in Indonesia
Feed manufactures play a vital role in boosting the growth of animal husbandry industry in Indonesia. Feed which accounts for 40%-50% of the production cost is a major expenditure for fish farmers. Business in fisheries, therefore, is highly potential in the country.
Ornamental fish and tuna are one of main aquaculture exported fish species in Indonesia. Other fish like arowana is rare and endangered specie. Different species need different feed pellets.
The way of fisheries in Indonesia falls into four species: marine(floating cages), brackish water(ponds), freshwater(ponds) and fresh water(cages in lake). The first three species are mainly feed with floating extruded feed pellet while fish in lakes are feed with sinking ones. Sinking feed is much more cheaper compared with floating pellet.

As we all know, good quality floating fish pellet with ingredients that are finely ground and properly cooked will make for better fish conversion ratios. However local fish farmers do not consider about lost feed and eutrophication thus further efforts of better fish feed and feeding management are urgently needed to improve production in aquaculture and save environment.
Based on data at the GPMT, by 2011, there were 56 animal feed manufactures in operation in Indonesia. Its animal feed industry is dominated by foreign companies such as PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia (PT. CPI), PT. Japfa Comfeed, PT. Sierad Produce, PT. CJ Feed, PT. GOLD COIN, and PT. Sentra Profeed. The big producers operate integrated industries that also include livestock farms, and processing facilities for animal husbandry products. Because of the availability of corn basic material, Jave has become the best place to set up factories.
Currently the country’s aquaculture is still facing difficulties over shortfall in supply of basic materials like corn. Fish feed manufactures, therefore, have asked the government not to impose import restriction on corn. The heavy dependence makes business in fisheries risky and highly vulnerable external factors. High prices of imported corn have resulted in a surge in the price of animal feed in the country. The government, therefore, has encouraged the use of locally produced basic material in a bid to cut the prices of feed.
Apart from these big manufactures, household and personal small scale feed factories are also encouraged to produce fish feed and other feeds. The presence of the small feed mills will contribute to development of aquaculture in those areas. The mills will be managed and operated by groups of farmers (Gapoktan). The basic material in the form of corn grains needed by the mill is expected from local farmers especially those located far from large animal feed manufacturers.
Although there has been so many factories producing fish feed in Indonesia, the aquaculture business prospects are still encouraging as the country still depends very closely on fish export.
