Market Situation of Canadian Feed Industry
Canadian feed industry is a critical partner in the country’s food safety system. The annual feed consumption is between 25 and 27 million tonnes. In the case of complete feed, the proportion of pig complete feed is 37%, cattle complete feed accounts for 44%, poultry complete feed proportion is 16%, the others are 3%. And about 50% of the complete feed is commercial feed. About 85% of the complete feeds are manufactured and selled by commercial feed companies whose quantities are 450 around the Canada. The proportion of feed companies is 34% in Quebec, 34% in Ontario, 22% in Prairies, 6% in Atlantic and 4% in British Columbia.Canadian feed industry highly depends on importing from America, Europe and Asia. Canada actually does not produce vitamins and the production of drug fine chemical industry is restricted. So the high-value trace elements such as vitamins, amino acids, animal health drugs, feed additives etc need to be imported.Canadian feeds mainly export to America mainly including the complete feed export trade across the border. The high value-added special feeds such as milk replacer, horse feed, premixed feed and so on are expanding export to Mexico, South Africa, Latin America, Asia etc.
As the great power of animal by-products production, consumption and trade, Canada has not had important events of food contamination, human and animal damage caused by feed security problems. This is closely related to Canadian feed security management work.
The Animal Nutrition Association of Canada (ANAC) is the national trade association for Canada’s animal feed industry. ANAC’s Feed Assure program is a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)-based feed safety management system under which almost 170 facilities are certified, accounting for over 70 percent of commercial feed production. Based on the HACCP management philosophy Canadians control the production links to ensure the production security of feed ingredients and the feed safety.
